This January, I had the pleasure of capturing Christian and Scout’s engagement photos at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Despite the colder weather and seasonal landscape changes, it was still a perfect backdrop for evergreens, color, and gorgeous sunlight, making for very classic photos!
Birmingham Botanical Gardens has become one of my absolute favorite spots for engagement sessions. With 67 acres of gorgeous landscapes, you’re getting multiple locations rolled into one.
Christian and Taylor chose Birmingham Botanical Gardens for their engagement session because they wanted something that felt natural and effortless. These two are tying the knot at Windwood Equestrian this summer, so their engagement photos needed to match their vibe – relaxed, authentic, and totally them.
During Christian and Taylor’s Birmingham Botanical Gardens engagement session, we explored some seriously beautiful areas:
The Japanese Gardens: This spot is so peaceful and romantic. The stone pathways, bridges, and water features create the prettiest backdrop. We captured some of Christian and Taylor’s quieter moments here, and they turned out stunning.
The Koi Pond Area: This area is perfect for afternoon sunlight, big open areas, and the stunning white architectural feature of the staircase and upper deck.
Christian and Taylor are easy to be around, they laugh with each other, and they don’t need much direction to look natural together. That’s the beauty of Birmingham Botanical Gardens engagement sessions – the setting is so incredible that couples can relax and focus on each other.
We wandered through the gardens, found the most beautiful light, and let their relationship take center stage. Their connection did all the work while I captured it.

Thinking about booking Birmingham Botanical Gardens for your engagement photos? Here’s what you should know:
Timing is Everything: Golden hour (right before sunset) is unmatched here. The light filters through the trees and creates this gorgeous, warm glow. Spring and fall bring amazing seasonal colors, but Birmingham Botanical Gardens looks beautiful no matter when you book.
Outfit Coordination: Christian and Scout did a fabulous job of matching their outfits to the colors of the surroundings while still being themselves. They looked polished but comfortable – which is the sweet spot. Coordinate your colors without being too matchy, and you’re set. Need more guidance? No worries, I include a Portrait Guidebook for all of my couples with my best advice regarding clothing, session tips, and more.
Be Yourselves: The best engagement photos happen when you’re not trying too hard. Walk, talk, be yourselves. I’ll handle the rest.
Christian and Taylor’s summer wedding at Windwood Equestrian is going to be incredible. After their Birmingham Botanical Gardens engagement session, I already know their wedding day will be full of genuine moments and real emotion.
Starting with an engagement session makes such a difference. We get comfortable working together, figure out what feels natural, and by the time your wedding day rolls around, it’s like photographing old friends.
If you’re newly engaged and searching for the perfect location for engagement photos, Birmingham Botanical Gardens needs to be on your radar. The variety of settings, the natural beauty, and the chill atmosphere make it ideal for capturing real moments between you two.
So excited for Christian and Taylor’s Windwood Equestrian wedding this summer – it’s going to be amazing!
